Healy & Joey…

We all dream of having a truly unique wedding…… thanks to you….. our dream came true!

I knew from the second I stepped into The Chestnut Club… that it was going to be the PERFECT place for the wedding.. and I was right! I’m sure we are slightly biased but I do think that we had the most perfect wedding and we are proud that we were able to invite our guest to such a beautiful and unique place. It was everything we had hoped for and truly the wedding of our dreams.

Please accept our sincere thanks for all your help, hard work, kindness and for providing us with such a beautiful venue. You made our wedding so stress free.. and I can’t tell you enough how much we appreciate everything that you have done. In every way the day will forever remain engraved in our memories and you will always be part of our fairy tale.

Love always,

Music Madness

May 11th, 2010

It’s your big day, the moment you’ve been waiting for. You and your soon to be life partner are about to get married with a room full of your closest friends and family. What music will you choose for your ceremony and reception? The music you choose can easily make or break your special day. Music sets the mood, creates emotion, and will leave lasting memories.

This past weekend Healy and I nestled a beautiful wedding here at The Chestnut Club. I started to think about what makes people choose the music they do, the options are endless. Our most recent newly weds decided on a DJ who brought a wide variety of jams, gorgeous lighting throughout the venue and conga hand drums which added a unique rhythm and feel. It’s what they enjoy and want to hear, why not…it’s your day!

DJ’s, live bands, orchestras and the list goes on. The modern question is DJ or live band? Me personally, I will enjoy most if I had an instrumentalist such as a pianist or violinist play during cocktails, past hors d’oeuvres, and dinner. In that time I would like to meet and greet with one another, after dinner I would like to feel the beat.

A band is live entertainment, you can’t beat that. But that comes with a charge, were talking thousands. But it’s money well spent. With a DJ you have every song (thanks to last minute downloading!) and it will sound exactly how it’s supposed to, for a fraction of the price. The most important decision is choosing your music, be sure to sit down with your entertainer and think it out. Both are a good choice and it wouldn’t hurt to leave a list of “what not to play.” I can think of so many songs that I don’t want to hear at a wedding.

Jean Valentin Photography

May 7th, 2010

One day, I got an email from Karen: “I’m writing about our partners, and for photography, I would like to write about favorite places where you like to go”.

I like to keep my work fresh and I always search for different looks. I don’t have a favorite place per se, but I do like to photograph in the city. Within a short walking distance you can have different looks and variety for your pictures.

But that got me thinking about one of the challenges a (wedding) photographer faces: coming up with a fresh look, despite of photographing many times at the same places. We, as photographers, rely very much on referrals: both from past clients as well as from colleagues and partners from the industry. That means that we end up photographing at one venue several times over the years. You don’t want your work to look the same as it did for a previous client. People like fresh ideas and they want their wedding to be unique. At the same time, the venues face the same challenges: they don’t want their venue look the same and dated and they want their clients to see the potential for a feel that suits them.

Recently I partnered with Paradis European Salon and Spa for a photoshoot. I asked Karen and Healy if we can use the Chestnut Club for our pictures. They were kind enough to let us use the space.

For me, it was a challenge to come up with different looks while staying in the same space. I also hope you can see the tremendous potential the Chestnut Club has to be “transformed” and have the look and feel that you desire.

Enjoy!

Eclectic Mixes

Not every couple agrees on everything.  So when it comes to choosing the music for your wedding reception, you may not see eye to eye.  And that’s OK.  Because when you hire a beat-mixing DJ, you do so knowing that you’ll both be happy with the music that is played.

A beat-mixing DJ is one who can seamlessly mix two different songs together, with no break, from two vastly different genres and keep the dance floor busy.  He has honed his skills and mastered his art.

The goal is to play the music the couple wants to hear, at the right times, and make sure the guests have a great time.   Not everyone likes the same music so it can be a challenge to keep grandma and great uncle Bill dancing when the next song the bride wants to hear is a rap song.  This is where the DJ can really prove himself.

A song that has been requested a lot lately is “Down,” by Jay Sean.

http://www.jaysean.com/index2.shtml

It has a good melody and beat and mixes well (with the right song of course).  Half way through the song, Lil Wayne comes in and raps – this is where you could lose grandma – so if you take the beat just before the rap starts, and mix in the beat of a popular Rock song like, “You Shook Me All Night Long,” by AC/DC, the younger crowd will keep dancing because they like the original song, and your older relatives will still dancing because they know the new song and are hearing a rock song they’ve heard before.

When you are dancing, there is nothing worse than the music coming to a screeching halt as the DJ drastically changes the speed of the music and the beats don’t match.  This gives your guests a chance to decide whether they want to keep dancing or get another drink.  Don’t give them the chance to make that decision – make it for them.  Hire a beat-mixing DJ, who can properly read your crowd – your guests will never have a chance to think about getting that next drink, with no “break” in the music.

Not too long ago we had a groom who only wanted to hear Guns N Roses at his reception.

http://web.gunsnroses.com/index.jsp

Guns N Roses is a great band, but they don’t have a lot of “dancing” songs, so the DJ had his work cut out for him.  At one point during dancing, the DJ was playing, “It’s Tricky,” by Run DMC.

http://www.rundmc.com/

There is a break in the middle of the song where you just hear the beat.  Matt looped that part of the song, so there was a continuous instrumental, and mixed in “Sweet Child of Mine,” by Guns N Roses at a specific guitar rift. The grooms eyes lit up and everyone kept dancing.  If Matt had played “It’s Tricky” all the way through, and then played “Sweet Child of Mine,” it wouldn’t have worked.  The reason what Matt did worked is because he knew the music well, knew how many beats per minute each song was and was able to match them up at the right points.

So when you start researching DJ’s/entertainment for your reception, think about what is most important to you – whether it be the type of music you hear, how it’s played or that the dance floor is packed – and then find out what their style is and see if they fit into your vision.  If you’re unsure, ask for referrals or testimonials from previous clients.  If you are a couple with vastly different tastes in music and it is important to you that the dance floor is packed all night with people of all ages, then a beat mixing DJ is for you.
